Investigations into Robbery in Bochum and the Ruhr Region

In 2014, police statistics recorded 16,645 cases of property offences (robbery, theft, burglary, fraud, criminal damage) in Bochum, accounting for 45 per cent of total crime in that year. The clear-up rate averaged just 28.96 per cent – for the remaining 71.04 per cent, our detectives in Bochum are on duty: +49 234 3075 0073.

Offenders Often Select Their Victims Deliberately

Robbery is being committed with increasing ruthlessness and brutality. Simply put, robbery is theft involving the use and/or threat of physical force. This physical force may involve knocking the victim to the ground or striking them with a fist in order, for example, to take their bag, wallet, bicycle and so on. The offender may also threaten the use of a weapon (= aggravated robbery) in order to obtain another person’s property. Offenders often select “easy” victims, such as people with visual or mobility impairments, elderly individuals or persons who appear physically weak.

Even if it sounds like a cliché, older people in particular still tend to withdraw their entire pension payment in cash from their bank at the beginning of the month. Robbers lie in wait for such moments. They follow the victim and, at a suitable opportunity, give them a forceful shove so that the victim falls. At that moment, the offenders steal the cash and disappear, usually on foot, as this allows them to escape more quickly via side streets, parks or over fences and walls. However, there are also offenders who do not shy away from using massive violence against physically strong individuals. In such cases, it often does not stop at a shove; instead, the threat posed by a weapon is used from the outset, whereupon the victim in most cases hands over money, credit cards and/or other items without resistance. The possibilities and case variations are almost limitless, but most cases follow basic patterns that a trained investigator can analyse.

Reduction in Police Resources Increases the Importance of Private Investigators in Bochum, Herne and Witten

While bicycle theft, pickpocketing and theft from or of vehicles are often handled rather half-heartedly by the police due to the low prospects of success, burglary and robbery are somewhat higher on the agenda. However, even here the highest clear-up rate is only around 50 per cent. This is primarily due to the fact that police authorities are suffering from severe staff shortages. Although politicians would like us to believe that police presence is increasing by recruiting around 2,000 new police trainees each year, which is undoubtedly the case, at the same time around 3,000 police officers retire during the same period. As a result, the number of active law enforcement officers is reduced year after year. It is not only the police who lose out, but also the victims. The only beneficiary is the offender – but not when it comes to our private investigators in Bochum. For us, there is no case of primary or secondary importance; we are at your side in all matters: +49 234 3075 0073.
