(Not) a Job Like Any Other: Prostitution

In 2012, around 500 prostitutes were registered in Bochum, 250 of them in brothels. All of them work voluntarily in the “oldest trade” in the world. In addition, there is an unquantified number of housewives, unemployed women, drug addicts and socially disadvantaged female migrants who offer their services on street corners and in street prostitution – some voluntarily, others not.

What drives these women to pursue this occupation? As mentioned above, some women do the job voluntarily, primarily because they set the tone and can refuse if they do not want to do something. Because they make the rules and have retained their independence. The other group of women, many of whom wait on street corners for a willing motorist and have to take what comes, bow to pressure from their partner or family or have no other choice in order to escape poverty. For various reasons, these women depend on the money they earn from prostitution, as our private detectives in Bochum have repeatedly established during their investigations, for example in the course of missing person searches.

When a Partner Earns a Little Extra

But why do women practise this activity voluntarily? There are many reasons: household money may be sufficient, but one would also like to treat oneself to a few extras; some simply do it for the enjoyment of sex without having to enter into a permanent relationship – not least because one can live out sexual preferences in this profession. The gradations are many: so-called “hobby prostitutes” with two or three selected clients per month over a period of perhaps one to two years in order to finance their studies exist just as much as women who spend their entire “career” in the red-light milieu and work there full time. That these women are single in their private lives is more the exception than the rule.

Especially with regard to the latter point, this often leads to problems within the family sphere. Many of the volunteers are married, in some cases also have children together with their spouse, and usually the partner is aware of the woman’s choice of profession (some couples have even found each other in this way). However, there are also married professional or illegally working prostitutes whose partner knows nothing about their wife’s occupation. The reasons for secrecy are just as varied as those of women who speak openly with their partner about it. Some women want to treat themselves to a few extras without having to beg their husband and see this as an opportunity to earn money quickly. Or they want some variety as a contrast to their everyday “run-of-the-mill sex” without having to enter into an affair. As a small “bonus”, this type of infidelity also comes with a more or less substantial sum of money, referred to as “pocket money”. What often tips the balance for many to conceal their profession from their spouse is the fact that they can give free rein to their sexual fantasies. In many marriages, numerous facets of sexual life are not lived out because one is embarrassed to share one’s wishes with one’s partner. As a result, marital sex in many relationships inevitably becomes a boring obligatory exercise sooner or later. Some women then seek sexual fulfilment in its full breadth by working as prostitutes. No one in their private environment knows what they do for a living. None of the clients knows who they are or where they come from, no one looks at them with contempt, they do not have to be ashamed of their preferences and inclinations, they do not have to explain themselves to anyone. For these women, prostitution is, as grotesque as it may sound, a piece of freedom.

We do not want to omit mentioning that, conversely, this of course also applies to men who work as escorts or, depending on age, as toyboys for the same reasons. But whatever the situation may be: the spouse at home often remains unaware for a long time.
